Why fuel efficiency is the fleet priority of 2026
For most UK fleets, fuel sits alongside wages as the largest running cost, often accounting for around a quarter to a third of total operating spend. When pump prices swing the way they have in 2026, that line on the budget moves whether you like it or not. What you can control is how much of every litre is wasted, and industry fleet research keeps pointing at the same conclusion: driver behaviour and day-to-day operating habits are the biggest controllable factor in a fleet's fuel bill.
That is why so many managers are turning to vehicle tracking and telematics. You cannot manage what you cannot measure, and fuel waste hides in places a fuel card statement alone will never show you.
Where fleets actually waste fuel
Before looking at fixes, it helps to know where the litres go. Across van and HGV fleets the same culprits come up again and again:
- Idling - an idling engine can burn between one and two litres of fuel an hour. Twenty minutes of idle time per vehicle per day across a fleet adds up to thousands of pounds a year for precisely zero miles travelled.
- Harsh driving - heavy acceleration, late braking and labouring in the wrong gear can push fuel consumption up sharply compared with a smooth driving style.
- Speeding - fuel economy falls away quickly at higher speeds. A van that cruises at 80mph on the motorway uses considerably more fuel than one at 70mph for a saving of only a few minutes.
- Dead mileage - out-of-route detours, poor job sequencing and unplanned return trips all burn fuel without earning anything.
- Neglected maintenance - under-inflated tyres, overdue servicing and clogged filters quietly increase consumption on every journey.
- Unmonitored private use - vehicles used out of hours add fuel spend the business never sees coming.
